Five for Friday: 27th April 2018
Fergus James - Golden Age
Sydney-based singer/songwriter Fergus James' debut single "Golden Age" is a wonderfully catchy indie pop tune. The lyrics speak of the struggle of being in love with someone who has put up walls, not letting you get too close. Fergus has recently been picking up steam having performed in support of Ed Sheeran on a couple of his Australian tour dates last month. Before that, Fergus also impressed Justin Timberlake who made a surprise visit to Fergus' school and heard him perform an original song, saying of it: "truly awesome... put that on the radio now". We look forward to hearing what comes next in his blossoming career.
Tors - We Say No
UK indie/folk band Tors have released a new single called "We Say No". These guys are consistently putting out really strong tracks and this one is no different, with an energetic yet folky chorus and warm vocal treatment. We can't help but hum along. You'd never tell, but they record their music in their dad's old shed. They've had recognition from BBC Introducing, 6Music and Radio X and they've just wrapped up a sold out tour with Tom Walker. They have a number of releases planned for 2018 and will be performing live at The Great Escape and Live at Leeds in May, Bushstock in June, and 110 Above in August.
Johnny Third - No Warning
Melbourne-based electronic artist Johnny Third has been touring New Zealand and Australia this and last month in support of his latest single "No Warning". His passionate vocals light up this future bass track leading up to a great melodic drop. He's released a number of singles in the past few years and has been featured on albums by NCS and Tasty Network, and is now working on his debut EP, about which he said: "if it helps one person through the struggles of their relationships it will all be worth it. Writing these songs have tested me emotionally".
Charlie Lane - Crazy Happy
This track is fun. You're listening along and thinking hey, this is a cool cruisey indie track, and then the lyrics come in. And it's glorious. It's a love/hate themed track from Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Charlie Lane who is backed by a self-titled five-piece band, and is the first single since releasing her second EP "Mood Swings & Antidepressants" last year which features equally cool, quirky tracks.
Rhvu - Feelin' U
With an R&B sound and fantastic bluesy, soulful trumpets, guitars and vocals, "Feelin' U" is a lovely track to get lost in. Melbourne-based singer, guitarist and producer Rvhu (pronounced "ra-who") describes the song as being, "all about dem young love feels. Her neck was smelling sweeter than a plate of yams with extra syrup". He's currently working on his debut EP "Outer Love".
