Funky Friday: 13th April 2018
We have a special edition of our Five for Friday this week featuring some super funky tunes for y'all to get groovin' to.
The Funk Hunters - Hands Up (Raise Your Fist) feat. Leo Napier
RIYL: K+Lab, Slynk, Defunk
With the release of their debut full-length album "Typecast" last month, DJ duo Nick Middleton and Duncan Smith of The Funk Hunters are set for an exciting 2018. The pair are longtime friends who met while attending film school in western Canada. Since then they've performed at major festivals including Coachella, Electric Forest, Burning Man and Shambhala. Part party banger, part socio-political punk, the lyrics on "Hands Up (Raise Your Fist)" initially reminisce of a simpler time in youth when nothing was a big deal, to now having had enough of a broken system. "Put your hands up, raise your fist, we're the new generation, sounds like this, hands up, raise your fist, middle finger to the man, try to 'cuff this". The production is super tight and super funky, and that drop just begs to be turned up.. way the funk up.
Big Gigantic - Got The Love feat. Jennifer Hartswick (The Funk Hunters Remix)
RIYL: K+Lab, Slynk, GRiZ
Last year The Funk Hunters also released a great remix of fellow electronic duo Big Gigantic's "Got The Love" giving it a heavier electro beat. Big Gigantic are Dominic Lalli (production/sax) and Jeremy Salken (drums) and they are no strangers to funk with other tracks including "Bring The Funk Back", "I've Gotta Know" and collaborations with GRiZ and Gramatik, even teaming up as "Big Grizmatik" at some live performances.
Defunk - Shake feat. Willdabeast
RIYL: Big Gigantic, The Funk Hunters, GRiZ
Continuing his style of fusing bass heavy dance music with other genres, Defunk wants to see you "Shake" on this song from his new EP "Empire", out now on Westwood Recordings. The track builds up energy with great horns from Will Glazier and Dan de Lisle of Willdabeast before bursting out in a triumphant drop. The EP effortlessly blends rap/trap, funk and rock across its four tracks and we can't get enough of it.
Patawawa - Patagonia
RIYL: Roman Kouder, Franc Moody, Sam Padrul
"Patagonia", the lead single on English trio Patawawa's debut EP "Bedroom" has a cruisey disco funk vibe and fantastic duet vocals. The group are on tour in the UK this month with fellow artists French Horn Rebellion.
Sam Wilmot from the band said "I have to say that Patagonia is my favourite song we have done so far, it's a track that we're all really proud of and it's been so much fun playing it live over the past couple of months and seeing people's reactions to it. The song actually comes from a place of going out too much and trying to deal with the anxiety that comes with living that life. Which I guess sounds quite dark, but actually I think it has a great, uplifting groove and hopefully will help people get through the next few cold, wet winter months!"
K+Lab - Mothership ReEntry feat. Alias & The Mic Smith (Beat Fatigue Remix)
RIYL: WBBL, Slynk, Opiou
DJ and guitarist Beat Fatigue was ten years old when he first picked up a guitar. Inspired by his heroes such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Scofield he just kept on making music in any form possible. His new remix of New Zealand artist K+Lab's "Mothership ReEntry" adds some superb guitar work and gives the track a fatter, more rhythmically complex but super tight sound. It is featured on K+Lab's remix album "The Worldly's Remixes" released on record label Lowtemp.
