We have a special edition of our Five for Friday this week featuring some super funky tunes for y'all to get groovin' to.
With the release of their debut full-length album "Typecast" last month, DJ duo Nick Middleton and Duncan Smith of The Funk Hunters are set for an exciting 2018. The pair are longtime friends who met while attending film school in western Canada. Since then they've performed at major festivals including Coachella, Electric Forest, Burning Man and Shambhala. Part party banger, part socio-political punk, the lyrics on "Hands Up (Raise Your Fist)" initially reminisce of a simpler time in youth when nothing was a big deal, to now having had enough of a broken system. "Put your hands up, raise your fist, we're the new generation, sounds like this, hands up, raise your fist, middle finger to the man, try to 'cuff this". The production is super tight and super funky, and that drop just begs to be turned up.. way the funk up [...]
Electronic sister duo Krewella bring us another banger called "Runaway" which feels like a sexy drive through the night in an 80s Porsche while wearing Ray-Bans (but where you can still see out and just feel really cool). The track has a great synth/bass rhythm, irresistible vocals and some Indian-sounding vocal chopping in the chorus as well as an 80s electro synthwave section after the second chorus. Krewella are currently touring the U.S. and will be touring Europe later in the year, details are on their website [...]
Known for fusing his passion for the trumpet with funky pop, Spencer Ludwig's latest single Just Wanna Dance is sure to get you groovin. "When I wrote that song, I was feeling very overwhelmed by the pressures of social media, what it all means and what needs to be done in order to fit in. Honestly, I don't want to have to worry about any of that. The song exposes the truth and says, 'All I want to do is dance and have a good time.'"
Spencer kicked off 2018 opening for The Chainsmokers and Jason Derulo and will be performing at Bonnaroo, Milwaukee Pride, and supporting Betty Who later this year [...]
Dance or twerk? Bad Royale, who describe themselves as "3 producers and an idiot" and whose only dreams in life are to "create awesome music, and to hunt sharks with machine guns from space", have teamed up with Jamaican vocalist Richie Loop for this banger. They have a bunch of bass releases in the works and we can't wait to hear more.
Nate Traveller combines soulful vocals with hip hop on his new EP "Alone", released Feb 2nd, 2018. The opening track Reflection starts off with his skillful and softly sung vocals for the first half of the song then seamlessly transitions to a rap before the final chorus.
Jalen is no stranger to pain; in his own words: "I've never felt more agony, frustration, and overall, lack of understanding at one time. I lost one of my brothers, Seiyid 'Fast Cash' Rahmaan, to police brutality in Mount Pleasant... I've lost upwards [of] ten individuals who personally had strong influences on my life. None of these losses were due to natural causes." The track features a jazzy soulful beat that underpins the emotional pull of the lyrics [...]
